1Bambu Lab · PLA Basic
190–230 °C (374–446 °F)
35–45 °C (95–113 °F)
Datasheet

PLA Basic lists a nozzle of 190–230 °C (374–446 °F) and a bed of 35–45 °C (95–113 °F). The drying row is 50 °C (122 °F) for 8 hours, from the Bambu data sheet. That is the dry cycle, not a print temperature.

2Prusament · PLA
205–225 °C (401–437 °F)
40–60 °C (104–140 °F)

Prusament PLA lists 205–225 °C (401–437 °F) and a bed of 40–60 °C (104–140 °F). Drying is 45 °C (113 °F) for 6 hours. Prusa's PLA article calls the printed plastic brittle. That is the part, and it is a different sentence from a spool that snaps in the extruder.

3Polymaker · Polylite PLA
190–230 °C (374–446 °F)
25–60 °C (77–140 °F)
Datasheet

PolyLite PLA lists 190–230 °C (374–446 °F) and a bed of 25–60 °C (77–140 °F). Drying is 55 °C (131 °F) for 6 hours. Three PLA rows, three drying temperatures. Use the row you are holding.

A spool that snaps on the way into the extruder is usually old, wet PLA. Dry it at the temperature published for that row, and reject it if it showed up brittle. Boiling it is a joke in the thread, not a process. Drying, storage, PLA printing, filament quality, and clogs are the pages that carry the detail.

Dry the row you have

PLA Basic dries at 50 °C (122 °F) for 8 hours. Prusament PLA dries at 45 °C (113 °F) for 6 hours. PolyLite PLA dries at 55 °C (131 °F) for 6 hours. The print windows are 190–230 °C (374–446 °F), 205–225 °C (401–437 °F), and 190–230 °C (374–446 °F). Drying temperature is not the nozzle temperature. The drying dataset is the table those hours come from. PLA is the hub.

Prusa's PLA article uses "brittle" for the printed part: it breaks along layers or into shards on impact. That stays true after you dry the spool. A dry PLA hook can still snap when you shock it. Hooks is the load case. Prusa's drying article is the source URL stored on the Prusament PLA drying fields.

Bambu's filament guide adds a second brittle case: filament that snaps inside an AMS channel, with certain PLA Wood and some fiber nylons on the example list. Dry those at their own rows before you call the AMS defective. Wood fill has the PLA Wood drying line, 55 °C (131 °F) for 8 hours.

The threads

r/3Dprinting 1myq0ge is the brittle-spool thread. The score-560 comment says refuse it if it arrived that way. The score-464 comment says PLA gets very brittle when it is old and moist, and that cheap filament is worse. There is no moisture percentage in the comment.

r/3Dprinting 1nff6t6 is the photo. The score-8 comment says 8 to 10 minutes in salty boiling water. The score-3 comment says wash the build plate. Skip both. The other three links are glow filament, a snap, and a sound that might be the extruder gear. No excerpt was supplied, so this page does not diagnose them.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • The score-464 comment and the drying rows point at the same fix: moisture, then a published dry cycle.
  • The score-560 comment gives the other branch: if it arrived brittle, send it back.

Cons

  • No excerpt in this set measures moisture. 'Moist' is the comment, not a percentage.
  • Drying temperatures differ by brand. A single 50 °C (122 °F) cycle would mis-state Prusament and PolyLite.

What the community says

r/3Dprinting 1myq0ge is brittle PLA. The score-560 comment says if it arrived that way, do not accept it. The score-464 comment says old, moist PLA gets very brittle, and that cheap filament is worse. r/3Dprinting 1nff6t6 is a photo of snapped PLA. The score-8 comment says 8 to 10 minutes in salty boiling water. The score-3 comment says wash the build plate. Neither fixes a brittle spool. No excerpt was supplied for r/FixMyPrint wgtl1k, r/FixMyPrint uh9ge7, or r/ender3 123qlw5. The bank titles there are glow filament, a snap in the path, and a snapping sound that might be the gear.

Questions

Will drying fix a spool that has been brittle for years?

The score-464 comment says old and moist. Drying addresses the moist half, at the row's temperature. The comment does not promise that a very old spool recovers. If the spool was brittle on arrival, the higher-scored comment says reject it.

Why not the boiling-water comment?

It is a pasta joke under a photo of snapped filament. The published dry cycles are 50 °C (122 °F) for 8 hours on PLA Basic, 45 °C (113 °F) for 6 hours on Prusament PLA, and 55 °C (131 °F) for 6 hours on PolyLite PLA.
