How do I handle filament runout / switching rolls mid-print?

1ELEGOO · PLAELEGOO PLA lists a nozzle of 190–230 °C (374–446 °F) and a bed of 35–65 °C (95–149 °F). r/ender3 13j4ucp names Elegoo PLA black. That print stopped extruding. The comments say heat creep, a tangle, or a 0.8 mm layer on a 0.4 mm nozzle. They do not describe a roll running out.PLA

2Prusament · PLAThe Open Filament Database lists Prusament PLA at 205–225 °C (401–437 °F) and a bed of 40–60 °C (104–140 °F). The Jet Black product page lists a nozzle of 215 °C (419 °F) and a bed of 50–60 °C (122–140 °F). The XL runout thread does not name a polymer. Check the filament sensor before you change a slicer setting. On the only runout in this set, the XL kept printing air. Clogs, under-extrusion, AMS, and MK4 filament cover the failures the other threads actually show.

The XL

r/prusa3d 1hps0qb is a Prusa XL print that continued with an empty nozzle. The score-50 comment says the sensor is likely off, and if it is on, recalibrate it. The same comment says preheat and push the new filament through. Expect clicking, because the nozzle is still full. A score-10 comment has done that push-through on an MK3 or MK4. A score-7 comment says the sensor stays off after an unloaded-filament prompt until it is turned back on. A score-7 comment also counts two sensors, one at the tube entrance and one above the gear. The XL page is the printer record. The MK4S page is the other Prusa record.

The MK3 non-S filament-sensor article says a runout pauses the print, unloads the last centimeters, and prompts for a new spool. If a piece stays in the PTFE tube, the article says push it out with the new filament. That article is the MK3 non-S sensor. It is the manufacturer page that matches the comment. It is not an XL procedure.

The other four threads

r/BambuLab 1i3f59y is a bend-mid-print model. The title says it reduces filament swaps. The score-18 comment asks to make a YouTube short. A score-5 comment asks for a poker-chip version. There is no sensor step in the retrieved comments.

r/ender3 13j4ucp is Elegoo PLA that stops extruding partway through a long print. The poster already replaced the nozzle. The score-8 comment asks about heat creep. The score-6 comment asks about extruder clicking and says a 0.8 mm layer on a 0.4 mm nozzle is the odd setting. A score-5 comment asks about a tangle. ELEGOO PLA is the named spool.

r/BambuLab 11g424j is a hotend that snapped. The post says PA12-CF was left inside the part. The score-19 comment talks about press-fit nozzles and a dye test for cracks. That is a hardware break.

r/3Dprinting 1n76prc is Polymaker Polylite ABS releasing from PEI on a P1S. A score-6 comment says 90 °C (194 °F) is too low for that person's ABS and uses 110 °C (230 °F). A score-10 comment wants a brim, a clean bed, and a warmer chamber. Bed adhesion is that failure.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • The XL comments agree on one check: the sensor is off, or it needs a calibration.
  • The MK3 non-S article and the score-50 comment use the same recovery: push the new filament through.

Cons

  • This set does not document an AMS refill, an M600 pause, or a splice. Those procedures are absent from the retrieved comments.
  • Four of the five titles say mid-print and then describe a different failure.

What the community says

r/prusa3d 1hps0qb is a Prusa XL that kept moving after the filament ran out. The score-50 comment says the sensor is probably off, or it needs recalibration, and says to preheat and feed the new filament through the nozzle. A score-15 comment says the sensors are off. A score-10 comment has pushed filament through on an MK3 or MK4. A score-7 comment says dismissing an unloaded-filament error leaves the sensor off. r/BambuLab 1i3f59y is a bend-mid-print model. r/ender3 13j4ucp is Elegoo PLA that stops extruding. r/BambuLab 11g424j is a snapped hotend with PA12-CF still in the part. r/3Dprinting 1n76prc is Polymaker Polylite ABS letting go of a PEI bed.

Questions

What does the MK3 article say to do with filament stuck in the tube?

Push it out with the new filament. The article also says a working sensor pauses the print and unloads the last centimeters. The XL thread's score-50 comment uses the push-through step and first tells you to check that the sensor is on.

Which filament did the XL run out of?

The thread does not name one. ELEGOO PLA is the filament named on the Ender 3 extrusion-stop thread, which the comments treat as heat creep, a tangle, or layer height.
