# Should you paint a print that stays outdoors?

Smooth-On says its cured epoxy coatings are not UV resistant and should be primed and painted for use outside. That sentence does not make PLA heat-proof or UV-proof. Which filament to print for the sun is the outdoor page, not a coat of paint.

## What the coating maker says

[XTC-3D](https://www.smooth-on.com/products/xtc-3d/), read 28 October 2026, is a two-part coat brushed onto a print. Smooth-On says it works with PLA, ABS, and other rigid prints, fills layer lines, and cures hard enough to sand, prime, and paint. Working time is about 10 minutes. One thin layer is what the page recommends, under 1/64 inch. Tack-free time is about 2 hours at 23 °C (73 °F). Smooth-On lists mild heat as 60 °C / 150 °F and says that cures a layer in about 15 minutes. The same paragraph says some print plastics melt above 200 °F. That is a warning about the cure, not a claim that the coat raises the plastic's softening point.

The [outdoor epoxy FAQ](https://www.smooth-on.com/support/faq/208/) says fully cured Smooth-On epoxy, without extra additives, can be used outside, and that these materials are not UV resistant. For exterior use it says to prime and paint, and it names an aliphatic urethane clear coat as one paint path. It also says to test the paint, and to know the hottest and coldest temperature at the site before picking a product by its heat deflection. That heat deflection is the epoxy's, on Smooth-On's charts. It is not a filament sheet.

[PolyLite PLA](/brand/polymaker/polylite-pla) still lists glass transition at 61 °C (142 °F) and heat deflection at 60 °C (140 °F) under 0.45 MPa and 58 °C (136 °F) under 1.8 MPa, checked 21 October 2026. A coat does not replace those lines.
## The plastic underneath

[Outdoor filament](/answers/outdoor) is the page for what to print. [PLA outdoors](/answers/pla_outdoor) [PETG outdoors](/answers/petg_outdoor).

[PolyLite ASA](/brand/polymaker/polylite-asa) lists a nozzle of 230–260 °C (446–500 °F), a bed of 75–95 °C (167–203 °F), heat deflection 103 °C (217 °F) at 0.45 MPa and 100 °C (212 °F) at 1.8 MPa, and glass transition 98 °C (208 °F). [PolyLite PETG](/brand/polymaker/polylite-petg) lists 220–250 °C (428–482 °F), a bed of 70–90 °C (158–194 °F), heat deflection 78 °C (172 °F) and 75 °C (167 °F), and glass transition 81 °C (178 °F). Those are uncoated sheets.

Sanding a coat is [sanding](/answers/sanding). It is not a weather rating.
## What the community says

A comment in [a Reddit thread in r/3Dprinting](https://www.reddit.com/r/3Dprinting/comments/14fzv2c/) says temperature is the larger problem, and that PLA softens in direct summer sun before UV damage shows.

A comment in [a Reddit thread in r/3Dprinting](https://www.reddit.com/r/3Dprinting/comments/14fzv2c/) says a good layer of paint helps with UV and that PLA still breaks down under heat and moisture.

A comment in [a Reddit thread in r/3Dprinting](https://www.reddit.com/r/3Dprinting/comments/nfs7n9/) says an XTC-3D coat on a printed boat stayed watertight after about a year outdoors, and that the color had not changed in a way they noticed.
