# How do I print silk PLA, and is it weaker?

Print silk PLA slower and hotter than plain PLA, and use it for decoration. The consensus says it is weaker, clogs more easily, and has weak layer adhesion. Bambu PLA Silk+ lists 210–240 °C (410–464 °F) and a speed under 250 mm/s, against 190–230 °C (374–446 °F) and under 300 mm/s on the PLA Basic sheet.

Silk PLA is a look. The consensus treats it as slower, hotter, weaker, and more likely to clog, and it tells you to keep it on decorative parts because layer adhesion is the weak direction.

## Settings that are actually on a sheet

[Bambu PLA Silk+](/brand/bambu-lab/pla-silk-plus) does not store a nozzle or a bed in the catalog. TDS V1.0 lists:

- Nozzle 210–240 °C (410–464 °F), bed 35–45 °C (95–113 °F)
- Print speed under 250 mm/s
- Drying in a blast oven at 55 °C (131 °F) for 8 h
- Retraction 0.6–1.0 mm at 20–40 mm/s

[PLA Basic](/brand/bambu-lab/pla-basic) lists 190–230 °C (374–446 °F) and a speed under 300 mm/s. Silk+ starts at 210 °C (410 °F) instead of 190 °C (374 °F), and its speed cap is lower. That is the “hotter and slower” evidence in hand. [Polymaker Silk PLA](/brand/polymaker/silk-pla), [eSUN PLA-Silk](/brand/esun-3d/pla-silk), and [SUNLU silk PLA](/brand/sunlu/pla-silk) store 190–230 °C (374–446 °F) from the Open Filament Database. Stay inside the row you loaded.

## Is it weaker?

The consensus says yes, and it adds weak layer adhesion. The Silk+ sheet’s own introduction says the opposite in marketing language: strength and toughness with a gloss finish.

The specimen tables, which Bambu says are for comparison only, are closer to the consensus than the introduction is. Silk+ Z tensile strength is 25 ± 4 MPa and Z elongation is 1.5 ± 0.2 %. PLA Basic is 31 ± 3 MPa and 7.5 ± 1.3 %. X-Y elongation is 2.8 ± 0.6 % on Silk+ and 12.2 ± 1.8 % on Basic. This catalog does not have the same test for Polymaker, eSUN, or SUNLU silk, so those three are not assigned these megapascals.

Use silk where a scratch or a snap is acceptable. A loaded part belongs on [plain PLA](/answers/pla_print) or a material chosen for [strength](/answers/strength).

## Clogs

The consensus says silk clogs more easily. When it does, the general list still applies: [why the nozzle keeps clogging](/answers/clog). A matte surface is a different product: [matte PLA](/answers/matte) and [FDM detail](/answers/high_detail).

## What the community says

The consensus is that silk PLA prints slower and hotter, is weaker, clogs more easily, and is for decoration. The caveat is weak layer adhesion.
