# What filament is easiest to sand, paint, and post-process?

PLA is the easy sand-and-paint filament when you use filler primer. ABS and ASA are the filaments this consensus vapor-smooths with acetone. Acetone is flammable, so that line is a material choice, not a workshop procedure.

Pick the finish before you pick the grit. The consensus has two paths, and they are different polymers.

## PLA, then primer

Sand and paint [PLA](/material/pla). [PolyLite PLA](/brand/polymaker/polylite-pla) and [Prusament PLA](/brand/prusament/pla) are ordinary PLA rows with nozzle ranges, which is what you want under filler primer. The consensus names filler primer. It does not name a brand or a grit sequence, so this page does not either.

Cosplay and miniatures are the usual reasons to paint. [Cosplay](/answers/cosplay) and [miniatures](/answers/miniatures) choose the filament for the object. This page only covers the finish.

## ABS and ASA, then acetone

[PolyLite ABS](/brand/polymaker/polylite-abs) stores 230–260 °C (446–500 °F) and a bed of 90–110 °C (194–230 °F). [PolyLite ASA](/brand/polymaker/polylite-asa) stores 235–260 °C (455–500 °F) and the same bed band. The consensus says both can be acetone vapor-smoothed.

Acetone is flammable. Do not treat a forum habit as a measured process. This batch does not include a time, a liquid volume, or a safe container, and this page will not add them. If the part also has to live outside, ASA’s weather note is on [outdoor filament](/answers/outdoor), not in the vapor.

## Printer fit

A bed range of 90–110 °C (194–230 °F) does not fully fit a 100 °C (212 °F) bed. The [P1S](/printer/bambu-lab-p1s) stores 100 °C (212 °F). Print inside the overlap, or pick a printer whose maximum covers the row, before you spend time sanding a warp.

## What the community says

The consensus is that PLA sands and paints well with filler primer, and that ABS and ASA can be acetone vapor-smoothed.
