# Does filament RFID or NFC tagging matter?

Bambu's wiki says an official spool's RFID tag tells the AMS the filament type, color, and production serial number, and it can estimate remaining length. Printing does not require the tag. OpenSpool and OpenPrintTag document their own tag formats. They are not a Bambu write-back.

Bambu's wiki says an official spool's RFID tag tells the AMS the filament type, color, and production serial number, and it can estimate remaining length. Printing does not require the tag. OpenSpool and OpenPrintTag document their own tag formats. They are not a Bambu write-back.

A tag is a label the printer can read. It is not the polymer, and it is not required for a manual profile. [Which filaments the AMS feeds](/answers/ams), [the AMS lite](/answers/ams_lite), and [Bambu's own spools](/answers/bambu_filament) are the neighboring pages. This one is only the chip.
## What Bambu documents

Bambu's [AMS functions wiki](https://wiki.bambulab.com/en/ams/manual/ams-function-introduction), read 25 October 2026, says an official roll has RFID tags on both sides and that the AMS has two reader boards. Reading can run on insertion, on startup, or when someone presses re-read. The AMS preloads, then feeds a length of filament so the spool turns and the board can see the tag. If filament is already out at the extruder, the wiki says the read will not run.

The [RFID-board article](https://wiki.bambulab.com/en/ams/maintenance/replace-rfid-board) says each board covers two slots and syncs filament type, color, and production serial number to Bambu Studio. The functions wiki also estimates how full the spool is from the length fed during one rotation. A complete 1 kg roll is 100 percent by default.

[Bambu PLA Basic](/brand/bambu-lab/pla-basic) lists 190–230 °C (374–446 °F), a bed of 35–45 °C (95–113 °F), and drying at 50 °C (122 °F) for 8 h, sheet checked 18 October 2026. The US store page says those parameters sit in RFID and are read through the AMS. [PolyLite PLA](/brand/polymaker/polylite-pla) lists 190–230 °C (374–446 °F) in the Open Filament Database, dataset imported 13 October 2026, a bed of 25–60 °C (77–140 °F), and drying at 55 °C (131 °F) for 6 h on the product page checked 14 October 2026. That row does not mention a tag. [Prusament PLA](/brand/prusament/pla) lists 205–225 °C (401–437 °F) and a bed of 40–60 °C (104–140 °F) in the same database import, and it does not store an NFC description.
## OpenSpool and OpenPrintTag

[OpenSpool's RFID page](https://openspool.io/rfid.html) says NTAG215 (504 bytes) and NTAG216 (888 bytes) are supported, and NTAG213 is not. The tag holds one NDEF record of type application/json. The sample record on that page uses protocol openspool, version 1.0, type PLA, a hex color, a brand, and the strings min_temp 220 and max_temp 240. Those two strings are the example. They are not a measured nozzle. The page says a brand outside its list is treated as Generic, and it names Generic, Overture, PolyLite, eSUN, and PolyTerra as examples.

[OpenPrintTag](https://openprinttag.org/), read 25 October 2026, says it is an open-source effort by Prusa Research for one spool standard, that remaining filament can be written back to the tag, that a blank tag can go on any spool, and that the tag works without a network. It does not publish a nozzle range.
## What the community says

[a Reddit thread in r/BambuLab](https://www.reddit.com/r/BambuLab/comments/13q188w/): reports respooling onto tagged Bambu spools plus a custom preset, and mentions tangles.
