# Can PLA be used outdoors?

PLA can last outdoors in shade and a cool climate, and it softens in hot sun, so use PETG or ASA for a part in direct sun or a closed car.

Shade and a cool climate are the case where people report PLA surviving. Hot sun and a closed car are the case where it softens. Switch to [PETG](/material/petg) or [ASA](/material/asa) for the second case. The [outdoor guide](/answers/outdoor) is the material ranking. This page does not replace it.

## What the comments report

A comment on r/3Dprinting 1ew3jx5 says PLA prints last well over 5 years outside, and it mentions a light color and moisture. A second comment on that thread starts an Illinois outdoor-light story. The supplied text does not finish a lifespan number, so this page does not invent one.

A comment on r/prusa3d 1m2ycdo says PLA outdoors in the Stockholm area for more than 3 years was fine unless the place gets very warm, which that comment puts at 60 °C (140 °F) and above, and that a previous ABS part went brittle in about 2 years. Another comment on the same thread says a PLA sign in the sun is still there and warped a lot, and that PLA doorknobs on a south-facing door broke after about 6 years. Those are reports. They are not a catalog UV test.

The bank also lists r/BambuLab 1b9r3zz, r/3Dprinting t81zr7, and r/functionalprint 184n94a. The supplied excerpts for this page do not include a temperature from those three threads.

## When to switch

[Prusament PETG](/brand/prusament/petg) lists 240–260 °C (464–500 °F) and 70–90 °C (158–194 °F). [Bambu Lab ASA](/brand/bambu-lab/asa) lists 235–260 °C (455–500 °F) and 90–110 °C (194–230 °F), with drying at 80 °C (176 °F) for 8 h. [How to print ASA](/answers/asa_print) is the enclosure and ventilation process. [Heat](/answers/heat) and [car interiors](/answers/car-interior) are the next questions when the part is more than "outside in the shade."

## What the PLA rows do not say

[PolyLite PLA](/brand/polymaker/polylite-pla) lists 190–230 °C (374–446 °F), 25–60 °C (77–140 °F), and drying at 55 °C (131 °F) for 6 h. [Bambu PLA Basic](/brand/bambu-lab/pla-basic) lists 190–230 °C (374–446 °F), 35–45 °C (95–113 °F), and drying at 50 °C (122 °F) for 8 h. Those are print settings. [PLA](/material/pla) has no outdoor-life column on this site.

## What the community says

The editorial summary says PLA softens in hot sun and degrades over a season or two, is fine in shade or a cool climate, and should give way to ASA or PETG otherwise. Supplied comments disagree on the clock. r/3Dprinting 1ew3jx5 says PLA prints last well over 5 years outside. r/prusa3d 1m2ycdo says PLA outdoors in the Stockholm area for 3+ years was fine unless it gets very warm, stated as 60 °C (140 °F) and above, and that a previous ABS print went brittle. Another comment on that thread says a PLA sign in the sun warped a lot and PLA doorknobs on a south-facing door broke after about 6 years. This page does not pick one lifespan and does not publish a UV-hours test.
