# How do I print multicolor / which filaments work together?

Swap colors inside one material family, on a printer path that filament can actually feed. Bambu's table marks standard PLA and PETG compatible with the AMS and AMS lite, and marks ordinary TPU not compatible. The supplied threads do not state a same-family rule.

Print multicolor as a color change inside one family: [PLA](/material/pla) with PLA, or [PETG](/material/petg) with PETG. Feed it with an [AMS](/answers/ams) only when Bambu's table says that filament can load. A manual pause is the same material rule without the feeder. [PLA printing](/answers/pla_print), [PETG printing](/answers/petg_print), [silk](/answers/silk), and [runout](/answers/filament_runout) are the related pages.

## What can share a toolpath

[Bambu's filament guide](https://wiki.bambulab.com/en/general/filament-guide-material-table) marks standard PLA compatible with open and enclosed printers and with the AMS and AMS lite. The note under the table says that PLA includes Basic, Matte, Tough, Metal, Silk, Aero, and Dynamic, and excludes PLA-CF, PLA-GF, Sparkle, and Marble. PETG is also marked compatible. The TPU row is Not Compatible with the AMS and AMS lite. A separate list says filament that is too soft, including TPU 95A, 85A, 83A, and 80A, is not recommended because it will not pass the channel. Certain PLA Wood is called out as too brittle for AMS lite, while PLA Metal, Wood, and Marble are marked compatible with the AMS.

[PLA Basic](/brand/bambu-lab/pla-basic) lists 190–230 °C (374–446 °F) and a bed of 35–45 °C (95–113 °F). [PolyLite PETG](/brand/polymaker/polylite-petg) lists 220–250 °C (428–482 °F) and 70–90 °C (158–194 °F). Those windows meet only at the boundary, which is a practical reason not to treat them as one profile. [TPU for AMS](/brand/bambu-lab/tpu-for-ams) lists 220–240 °C (428–464 °F) and a bed of 30–35 °C (86–95 °F). It is a named product. The compatibility table's TPU row is still Not Compatible. The [AMS answer](/answers/ams) already treats that SKU as the exception and ordinary TPU as a spool-holder filament. [Bambu Lab](/brand/bambu-lab) and [Polymaker](/brand/polymaker) are the brand indexes.

No page cited here publishes a weld strength for PLA stuck to PETG. If the part has to hold a load at the color change, stay in one family and test the joint. Do not take the absence of a number as permission.

## The threads

[r/FixMyPrint 1jhwm25](https://www.reddit.com/r/FixMyPrint/comments/1jhwm25/) did not produce a silk-PLA setting in the supplied comments. Both score-1 comments are jokes.

[r/3Dprinting 1odfqhj](https://www.reddit.com/r/3Dprinting/comments/1odfqhj/) is resin, including printed teeth. The score-89 and score-17 comments are not filament advice. [Resin versus FDM](/answers/resin_vs_fdm) is that split.

[r/BambuLab 15hik2k](https://www.reddit.com/r/BambuLab/comments/15hik2k/) is the purge-heavy first AMS print already cited on the AMS page. The bank titles for [r/BambuLab 14uype2](https://www.reddit.com/r/BambuLab/comments/14uype2/) and [r/3Dprinting 1gsxx8w](https://www.reddit.com/r/3Dprinting/comments/1gsxx8w/) are a startup purge and a pause-and-swap. No excerpt was supplied, so this page does not describe a purge volume or a pause gcode.

## What the community says

r/FixMyPrint 1jhwm25 has two score-1 comments, one about a week every month and one Hellraiser joke. They do not discuss silk PLA. r/3Dprinting 1odfqhj is a multi-material resin printer that printed teeth. The score-89 comment is a joke. The score-17 comment is about painting dental models by hand. r/BambuLab 15hik2k is already a source on the AMS page, and the bank title is a first AMS print with more than 700 filament changes. No excerpt was supplied for r/BambuLab 14uype2 or r/3Dprinting 1gsxx8w. Those bank titles are a purge before a single-color print, and pausing a non-multicolor printer to swap filament.
