# Do cardboard spools work in the AMS, and how do I keep dust and jams down?

The notes also limit the spool to 50–68 mm wide and 197–202 mm in diameter. Bambu's AMS notes say to use a plastic spool that fits, or a spool adapter ring if the spool is cardboard, because cardboard can slip and leave debris. The catalog does not record which of these spools are cardboard.

Cardboard is a spool problem, not a PLA problem. [What the AMS will feed](/answers/ams), [refill spools](/answers/refill), and [tangles](/answers/tangle) are the overlaps. The temperatures below are the polymers. They do not say the spool is cardboard. This catalog does not store that.
## What Bambu tells you to do

Bambu's [AMS notes](https://wiki.bambulab.com/en/knowledge-sharing/notes-ams), read 25 October 2026, limit the spool to 50–68 mm wide and 197–202 mm across. They recommend Bambu filament as the tested fit, a plastic spool otherwise, and a spool adapter or ring for cardboard so it slips less and leaves less debris. The same note says not to run TPU, TPE, or absorbent PVA through the AMS, and to be careful with brittle or very hard fiber fills. A ring does not change those two limits.

The [mods page](https://wiki.bambulab.com/en/general/bambu-mods-to-avoid) says some cardboard spools are not round, which loads the feeder and the front roller, and that the rim can shed dust into the gears. It says to respool onto plastic, or to use a printed ring with no burrs so the ring does not cut the roller. It names Polymaker's adapters as one option. The [reusable-spool page](https://wiki.bambulab.com/en/knowledge-sharing/bambu-reusable-spool) says not to dry filament on a printed spool, because the drying temperature can soften it.

[Polymaker's cardboard note](https://wiki.polymaker.com/printing-tips/common-printing-issues/cardboard-spool-ams-issues) says AMS rollers can make cardboard slip or jam, including their own spools when a rim is dented or a roller is worn. For ambient use, or a 45 °C (113 °F), 12-hour PLA dry in an AMS 2 Pro, they name an adapter in PolyLite PLA Pro. For a 65 °C (149 °F), 12-hour dry they say standard PLA can soften, and they name PolyMax PC or PETG for the adapter.

[Bambu PLA Basic](/brand/bambu-lab/pla-basic) lists 190–230 °C (374–446 °F), a bed of 35–45 °C (95–113 °F), and drying at 50 °C (122 °F) for 8 h. [PolyLite PLA](/brand/polymaker/polylite-pla) lists 190–230 °C (374–446 °F), a bed of 25–60 °C (77–140 °F), and drying at 55 °C (131 °F) for 6 h. [Overture PLA](/brand/overture/pla) lists 190–220 °C (374–428 °F), a bed of 25–60 °C (77–140 °F), speed up to 300 mm/s, and drying at 50 °C (122 °F) for 7 h. None of those rows stores cardboard or plastic.
## What the community says

[a Reddit thread in r/BambuLab](https://www.reddit.com/r/BambuLab/comments/1k27ew4/): A comment says Bambu PPA-CF is on cardboard so it can be dried hotter than plastic.

[a Reddit thread in r/BambuLab](https://www.reddit.com/r/BambuLab/comments/109ck01/) moves Overture cardboard onto a reusable spool and says Polymaker uses cardboard too.

[a Reddit thread in r/BambuLab](https://www.reddit.com/r/BambuLab/comments/109ck01/): The other says newer eSUN matte spools are cardboard and names rings or a Bambu spool.
